Realism
I have had some people saying I am making my life unnessasarily complicated by worrying about the history of the elves and the like – but I was a coherant, consistant world for my protagonist to inhabit.
I also want to thread the story around real events both historical and geological and climatological – these events will give me a skeleton on which to build a solid story.
However I am abit worried about time – I wont be able to do as good a job of research in a month as I would like too but then this is always the problem with my scifi stories – I never get anywhere as I’m too busy looking up interesting things I wont to put in them and that is part of the reason I wanted to do NaNoWriMo. I have written a complete novel length story in the past approximatly 85, 000 words but it is not scifi or horror or any of the genres I actually want to be writing – it was a self propelled story that wanted to be written – it also had a pretty straight forward time line so wasn’t exactly taxing in the continuaty area though I’m still finding mistakes as I type it up!
From my own reading I know that good fantsy/scifi/horror novels inhabit believable worlds this is what I want in my story, something so real and vivid that when you are reading it – you are there, you are the characters etc…
However there is a danger I have seen good authors fall into and that is putting everything you find out into the story! I don’t want to do this and infact think it would be impossible but what I do want to do is immerse my mind in the facts so that I can taste the world in immense detail allowing me to convey it in a stronger more emotive way!
I would love to hear others opinions on this by the way!

I have the same problem with “too much research, not enough writing.” I’m thinking of writing the story and then going back and adding some of the details in later. That way, I won’t be spending all of my time researching, and I can always go back and add descriptive detail. My guess is that you’ve already done tons of research on elves and geography and such, and could probably write the story with what you have, and tweak it later. What do you think?

I have been considering writing the ‘futuristic’ bits that don’t need the research as much first – though I think I’ve got my first chapter sorted too.
I think your suggestions good – I was sort of worried it would be sort of cheating :/
