Aquatic Apes

During my A’levels I did alot of what I thought of as background reading – which was probably just procrastination – doing Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Classical Civilisation I spent alot of time reading up on human origins and space (with the result of being asked if I was a terrorist by the librarian :/) – when I say origins I mean our culture and science/tech as well as biology – I was even interested in the spiritual evolution of the human animal leading to some interesting mixes of books which with hindsight I suppose would have looked dodgy :/

Anyway I read basically all the Leaky stuff about Lakes in Africa and what have you and was always disaticified – I was also contemplating and infact writing a book series I dubbed the Crystal Singer which I may well one day re-visit. It was infact a hard dicission not to make The Punk In Pink the Crystal Singer – but I wanted something fresh – something that would hopefully stay small (haha!) and therefore get completed – plus my writing and ideas have shifted somewhat since I was a teenager (I wonder if I’ll say the same thing in my 30’s?).

ANYWAY! I came across the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis and was spell bound – now its a contriversal alternative to human evolution accounting for us walking on two legs and being hairless and even having tear ducts etc… But I love this theory – it just shouts YES at me. Now I haven’t read the scientific papers surrounding it or anything but again I am using it for fiction so that really doesn’t matter!

My premiss is that the Elves are the Aquatic Apes and we have the characteristics becuase they made us! They I have decided even have webbed hands and feet! And their higher brain function was superior to the other higher primates becuase they had all that fish protein and oil to eat etc… This is why their civilisations where all ocean based!

Obviously I need to think carefully here about how human they look and how much like a ‘grey’ alien – do I want them to be able to pass as human in society or not? And does it matter that Star Gate had the Egyptian gods as ‘greys’?

Well I’m keeping the idea I think – I just need to refine it!
